Lesson 33: Interpretation of the Verse

In the Name of Allah, the most Compassionate, the most Merciful

And bless be upon Muhammad and his pure Household, and may Allah's curse be on his enemies from now until the Day of Resurrection! And there is no power or strength except for the Lofty Glorious Allah.

The Wise Allah has stated in His Glorious Book:

'… so I swear by the twilight, and by the night and what it envelopes, and by the moon in her full perfection, that you march along [life, death and Resurrection] stage by stage, (Qur'an: 84/ 16-19).'

Most of the commentators have commented the sentence: لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ to represent the different situations of man in the Inter, Resurrection, the vast barren Land, the Straight Path, and also paradise and hell

The evidence occurred in the last nations will also happen in Islam

In the "Commentary of Ali bin Ibrahim", there is a narrative under this Verse from the Messenger of Allah, Bless be to him and his Descendants, that:

The Messenger of Allah, Bless be to him and his Descendants, sated: You will indeed remember and it will happen to you whatever happened to those in the past, and you will witness it without any difference. It is like the similarity of two horseshoes, or the similarity of two arrows.[3] You will never divert from the course they followed – not even as much as a span of hand your affairs will differ from theirs.[4] Even if there were some people among them who entered into the barrow of a lizard, you too will enter into such borrow as they did."

He was asked: 'Do you mean those people before us who were the Jews or the Christians?'

He stated: "Then, who else I am talking about? You will surely break all the laws and ties of Islam one after another. The first thing you will break is trustworthiness and the last one is pray."

According to the meaning of this narrative, there are other narratives by the Sunnite and the Shiite. Among the events that happened in the tribe of the Jews and the Christians was the diversity of opinions among the nation. Many differences occurred among the nations of Moses and Jesus, many disputes and misunderstanding happened and they came with too many opinions and thoughts. Every tribe of them followed its own selected chief, in this way, great many tribes with their own chiefs were established and the main religions waded away; the people who were following those two religions decreased and became next to nothing.

Among all the people of Moses, one tribe followed the successor of Joshua bin Noun, and from the nation of Jesus only one tribe followed the successor of Simon bin Safa. Therefore, there will surely happen differences in the nation of the Final Messenger, then, only a tribe of them will follow the Successor of Ali bin Abī Tālib, upon him be peace.

Narratives concerning the differences of the nation after the Messenger of Allah

Mowaffagh bin Ahmad Kharazmi, who is the great scholar of the Sunnite, by means of his documents relates from Ali bin Abī Tālib, upon him be peace that:

[The Holiness Commander of the believers] said that: 'The Messenger of Allah, Bless be to him and his Descendants, stated me: "O Ali, your exemplary among my nation is as the exemplary of Jesus, the son of Marry. The folk of Jesus were divided into three sections: one tribe of them belied in him and they were the disciples, and a tribe turned to be enemy with him, so they were the Jews; finally, a tribe exaggerated by giving him the divinity grade, so they were the disbelievers. And my nation to will fall into three sections about you, one section is your followers and they are the believers, the second section will be your enemy and they are the guilty of perjury; and a section will exaggerate you, they will give you the Divinity Position and they are the losers. And o Ali! You and your followers will be in paradise, and your enemies and the exaggerators will be in hell."

And also it is narrated from ibn Marwia, who is of the great scholars of the Sunnite, and he has related it from Aban bin Taghlib of Moslim:

Moslim says: 'I heard Salman, Abuzar and Mighdad say: "We were sitting in the presence of the Messenger of Allah when three men of the Immigrants came in. The Holiness Messenger, Bless be to him and his Descendants, stated: "My nation, after me, will divide into three groups: one group is the right ones and they never mix up the right with wrong, their similarity is as gold that is as much as fire is blown to it the purity of that increase." And while pointing to one of those three, he added, their Imam is this, he is the one that Allah has entitled him in His Book as the Imam, Mercy and has enjoined following him. And a group of them are the wrong and they never go after right, their example is as the iron, as much as fire is blown to it its impurity increases." Moslim says: 'I asked who the right people were and who their Imam was.' He stated: "He is Ali bin Abī Tālib," but he avoided naming the other two. No matter how much I asked him to introduce those two Imams, he did not' Then, ibn Mardoweiia says: 'Similar to this relating of us, the Sunnite have also related it.'

Anyhow, he has brought this narrative exactly as it is in the book of "Salim bin Gheia Hilali Kofi", and he has mentioned it word by word as it is until he says:

Then he says:

And a group is misled and always in dilemma – the people in that group are neither with the right nor with the wrong – which is one of those three.

And I asked the Imam about the Imam of right and justice, he stated: "He is Ali bin Abī Tālib, upon him be peace, and Sa‘d is the Imam of the disbelievers." No matter how much I begged him to tell me the name of the third Imam but he ignored answering me. However, by sign and gesture he let me know who he was.

And many narratives have been related by the Sunnite and the Shiite that the nation of the Messenger of Allah will be divided into seventy-three sections, and from them seventy-tqo sections will be in the Fire and one in paradise and these are the followers of the Commander of the believers, Ali bin Abī Tālib, upon him be peace.

By the Shiite, it has been related in several shapes and styles and they are from:

1- Kafi, Ay‘yashi commentary, theAmali of Sheikh Tousi, Jame-al-Akhbar, the Khesal of Sadough, Ihtijaj of Tabarsi, the commentary of Tha‘labi,[9] the book of Salim bin Ghis Hilali, and Fazaeel of ibn Shazan, the book of Rozat fil-Fazaeel, which all of them, by men sod their documents, have related them from the Commander of the believers, upon him be peace.

He states that he has heard the Holy Messenger of Allah, Bless be to him and his Descendants, say: "After Moses, his nation was divided into seventy-one groups: one group was the rescued but seventy groups are in the Fire. And the nation of Jesus, after him, was divided into seventy-two groups, one group was saved and seventy-one groups are in the Fire. And after I am passed away, my nation will be divided into seventy-three groups, a group will be saved but seventy-two groups of them will be in the Fire."

2- It is related in the book of "Gharat" of Abi Aqil from Ali bin Abī Tālib, upon him be peace, that he sated:

The Holiness stated: "The Christian's tribe differed a certain amount and so did the tribe of the Jews, and you the nation os Islam will differ in such amount – even a group more than the Jews and the Christian you will differ. Know that all these

groups will be astray but except me and my followers."

3- It has been related from the book "Fazaeel" of ibn Shazan and the book of "Rouza" that the Commander of believers stated: 'After the Messenger of Allah explaining the disagreements of the nations, he mentioned: "The saving tribe from Moses' nation were those who followed his successor, and the saving tribe from the nation of Jesus were those who followed his successor." And then, he added:

"And my nation will fall into seventy-three tribes: seventy-two tribes of them will enter the Fire and one tribe is will be in paradise: they are those who follow my successor."

The Holiness Commander says: 'At that moment, the Messer of Allah touched my shoulder saying: "Those seventy-two tribes are those who, concerning you, break the covenant of Allah, and one tribe is in paradise, they are those who love you , they are your followers."'

It is related by the Commander of the believers, upon him be peace, that:

4- The Holiness Commander of the believers said to the chief of  the Jews: "How many tribes have you been divided in?'

He said: 'Into such and such tribes.'

The Holiness replied: "You are lying." Then, he turned to the people saying: "If I get the rein and the Governing, I will give my judgement to the people of Torah by the Torah, and among the people of Gospel by the Gospel; and among the followers of the Qur'an by the Holy Qur'an.

The people of the Jews were divided into seventy-one tribes, seventy tribes of them are in the Fire and one tribe in paradise; they are those who followed Joshua bin Noun, the successor of Moses. The nation of the Christians were divided into seventy-two tribes, seventy-one of them are in the Fire and one in paradise; they are those who followed Simon, the successor of Jesus. Now, this nation will be divided into seventy-three tribes, seventy-two tribes of them will be in the Fire and one tribe in paradise; they are those who follow the Successor of Muhammad, Bless be to him and his Descendants."

Then, while stroking his chest, he stated: "Thirteen tribes out of the seventy-three are showing affection to me and claiming to be friends of mine; but only one tribe of them will enter paradise – they are sincere and moderate Shiite but the rest are in the Fire."

However, through the narratives of the Sunnite which are about disagreement and differences are the "Mosnad" of Abi Dawood, and the "Sonan" of ibn Majeh, and the "Mosnad" of Ahmad Hanbal[14] which goes on explaining in detail, and also the Imam of Both Holy Shrine, Mowaffagh bin Ahmad Kharazmi  which relates it by the means of his documents from Ali bin Abī Tālib that:

[The Commander of the believers] stated that: "This nation will be divided into seventy-three tribes, seventy-two of them will be in the Fire and only one tribe in paradise, those are those concerning them Allah, the Lofty, ha stated: 'And among those We have created, there are some who guide the people to the straight path and they establish justice,' so they are my followers and I."

And also Hafiz Muhammad bin Musa Shirazi has written in a book that he has brought them together in twelve commentaries: the commentary of Abi Yosuf Yaghub bib Sofyan, the commentary of ibn Joraih, the commentary of Moghatil bin Soleiman, the commentary of Waki bin Jarrah, the commentary of Yosuf bin Mosa al-Ghattan, the commentary of Ghatada, the commentary of Abi Obeida al-Ghasim bin Salam, the commentary of Alibin Haran at-Taee, the commentary of as-Soddi, the commentary of Mojahid, the commentary of Moghatil bin Hayyan, the commentary of Abi Salih and all of the commentators are from the Sunnite.

It has been related from Anas bin Malik that he has said: 'We were sitting in the presence of the Messenger of Allah and was speaking of a man who prayed a lot, fasted, gave in the charities and paid the due welfare tax.' The Holiness Messenger of Allah stated us he did not know him. We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he is the worshipper of Allah, he always praise and sanctifies Allah and remembers Allah only through the Monotheism.' The Holiness stated that he did not know such a man. In the mean time, while we were busy talking about the man, all of a sudden, he passed by and we turned to the Messenger saying: 'There he is, this is the very believing man we were talking about.' The Holiness Messenger cast a glance on him  and then said to Abu Bakr: "Come on! Take this sword, follow him and try to behead him. Because he is the first man from the party of Satan who creates seditions." Abu Bakr stood up, took the sword and went after him to the mosque. He walked into the mosque and saw that the man was bowing down to pray. Abu Bakr waited and was surprised and by himself said: 'By Allah, I will never kill this man, it is because the Messenger has avoided us killing any worshippers.' He turned to the Messenger of Allah saying: "O Messenger, I saw him at the state of praying, so …'

The Holiness stated: "Take your seat, you have no merit of killing him. Now, you Omar, take the sword from him, go to the mosque and behead him."

Omar says: 'I took the sword and went to the mosque, I entered it but noticed that he was prostrating, so I by myself said: 'Never! By Allah, I will never kill a man who is praying, because the one (Abu Bakr) who is better than I am did not kill him, and saved his soul.' So returned to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'O Messenger, I saw the man prostrating.'

The Holiness stated: "Sit down, you have no merit of killing him. O Ali, stand up, you are his murderer, go and wherever you fine him kill him at once. Then, by killing him, you will not fine any differences among my nation."

The Commander of the believers says: 'I took the sword, went to the mosque, but did not fine the man. So I returned to the Messenger of Allah and had the honour to inform that: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not see him," so He told me:

So he (the Holiness Messenger) told me: "O Aba al-Hassan, the nation of Moses has been divided into seventy-one groups: one group was the rescued but seventy groups are in the Fire. And the nation of Jesus, after him, was divided into seventy-two groups, one group was saved and seventy-one groups are in the Fire. And after I am passed away, my nation will be divided into seventy-three groups, a group will be saved but seventy-two groups of them will be in the Fire." I had the honour to ask: 'O the Messenger of Allah, then who is the rescued group?' He stated: "They are those who follow you and copy the behavour of yours and your followers." And at that moment, concerning that seditious man this Verse was revealed:

'… he has turned aside haughtily so that to mislead [people] from the path of Allah. For him is disgrace in this world; and We shall make him taste the chastisement of the burning, (Qur'an: 22/9).'

That man was the first one from among the people of innovation and deviation who rose against the Commander of the believers. Ibn Abbas says: 'By Allah no one but the Commander of the believers killed him in the Battle of Siffin – a death by humiliation, abject and torture, and in the Hereafter, there is burning chastisement for him for standing against the Commander of the Believers.' [18]

Most of the great men have said that seditious mad was killed in the Battle of Nahrawan, he was of the Khawaridj and was called ذوالثّديه in short. It is put in the book of " الاصابه" that when he was appeared to the Messenger in that event, the Messenger asked him: "For Allah sake, tell the truth. When were passing us sitting here, did you not think by yourself: 'I have privilege over all people sitting here!' " The man said, 'Why, I did.'

It is said in certain that the word ذوالثّديه is the same, ذوالخويصِر that is حرقوص بن زهير who was killed in the Battle of Nahrawan by the Commander of the believers, upon him be peace. And when the war ended, the Holiness commanded ordered his men to search for him and find his corpse, because according the prophecy of the Messenger of Allah he might be killed. Bout no matter how much the companions looked for him, they did not find the corpse. The Holiness was sure that he was killed. So he said to them to investigate more, they did, and finally they found his corpse in a ditch filled up with dirt and broken canes among the vast reed plantation; it was them the prophecy of the Messenger of Allah, who had said "Ali you are the murderer of that man," was revealed.

The unseen information of the Commander of the believers, upon them be peace, in the Battle of Nahrawan

Among the secret news of the Holiness, in the Battle of Nahrawan, is that he stated: "Before the battle comes to an end, there will remain no more than ten of those army and ten of our men will be killed." When the war ended, there were only nine alive among the Nahrawan's fighters who fled away, though they were four thousand in the beginning; and only nine people of the Commander of the believers were killed.

One of the Khawaridj is Abdur-Rahman bin Moljam Moradi who had made a covenant with two men at Mecca to kill the Commander of the believers. Ibn Abi al-Hadid, by means of his document, relates it in "the explanation of Nahj-ul-Balagha" from Abu Abdur-Rahman who said:

The Holiness Imam Hassan says: 'I left the home as my father was going to pray at the mosque. My father told me: "O the beloved of mine! I was awake all the night through, so did I keep the family awake. As it was the Friday Eve and seventeen days had already past of the month of Ramadhan. Then, because of severe sleepiness I was capture by little dozing. In my short dream, the Messenger of Allah appeared to me and I told him: 'O Messenger of Allah, how adversity and torture I have receive from this nation of yours!' The Messenger of Allah stated: "Do curse them." I said: 'Instead of their immorality towards me, honour me the visiting of the Good, and for their injuring me, give the worst of the worst to them.'

The Holiness Imam Hassan said: 'Ibn Abi an-Nabbah came and raise his voice to call for prayer. The Holiness set out for prayer and I followed him. All of a sudden two men appeared the stroke the Holiness on the head: one of the strikes cruelly settled in the middle of his head and the another on the side.'

In some of the narratives, it is related that the Commander of the believers, upon him be peace, had revealed his dream to Imam Hassan on the last night of his death.

And then, the Commander of the believers had said: "After my prayer, the Messenger stated: "O Ali, your prayer is accepted for in three nights' time you are going to be my guest." O Hassan, two night have already passed since my dream and tonight is the Last Night of mine!'
